Republican John F. King is seeking reelection as Georgia insurance and safety fire commissioner in the Nov. 3, 2026, election against Democrat Keisha Sean Waites.
King was appointed in July 2019 and elected to a full term in 2022. His official biography describes earlier service as Doraville police chief and says he retired from the Army as a major general.
Insurance enforcement
His campaign platform emphasizes responding to consumer complaints, investigating fraud, supporting disaster claims assistance and pursuing stronger penalties for insurers. He also says he wants insurers to follow through on commitments to lower rates after changes to lawsuit rules. Future premium reductions are not guaranteed by those statements.
Georgia Access
King highlights the state’s move to Georgia Access. The exchange is a state-run marketplace operating under the Affordable Care Act; creating it did not remove Georgia from that federal law.
Authority and costs
The office regulates insurance within its jurisdiction and oversees safety-fire functions. Its authority operates within state and federal law, and it does not control every employer health plan or all healthcare prices.
The campaign page reviewed does not provide a complete new implementation budget or a guaranteed reduction in individual insurance bills. Changes to statutory penalties require legislative action.
The Sandy Springs Record did not receive a direct questionnaire response from the candidate and does not endorse candidates.
