Keisha Sean Waites, a Democrat and former state representative and Atlanta City Council member, is running for Georgia insurance and safety fire commissioner in the Nov. 3, 2026, election.
Her campaign website identifies insurance affordability and consumer protection as central priorities.
Background
Waites represented Georgia House District 60 and later held an Atlanta City Council at-large seat. Her campaign also cites work with the Federal Emergency Management Agency and the Small Business Administration on disaster response and recovery.
Insurance rates and consumer protection
Her priorities page proposes a “Rate Freeze Initiative,” described as reviewing and challenging unjustified auto and home insurance increases. It also calls for a dedicated fraud task force to protect seniors and vulnerable families from insurance scams.
The page calls for ending ZIP code and credit-score discrimination but does not explain a specific rule change or legislative mechanism. It does not provide a budget, staffing plan or implementation timetable for the proposed task force or rate initiative.
For local policyholders, those proposals concern premiums and assistance with suspected fraud. The campaign materials reviewed do not establish how much individual households would save.
The office’s authority
The Office of Insurance and Safety Fire Commissioner reviews insurance products and rates within its legal authority, licenses insurers and agents, investigates complaints and insurance fraud, and administers fire-safety responsibilities.
Proposed changes would have to operate within state law. A campaign promise to challenge rates does not guarantee that every increase can be blocked or reversed.
The Sandy Springs Record did not receive a direct questionnaire response from the candidate and does not endorse candidates.
