Sandy Springs is putting the finishing touches on a $1.04 million makeover of Morgan Falls Dog Park, with an official ribbon-cutting set for 2 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 14.
The 3.4-acre park along the Chattahoochee River will reopen in early October with new shade canopies, two fenced areas, dog agility equipment, a washing station, new grass and benches. The project, first reported by Rough Draft Atlanta, directly addresses the top complaint from a 2024 community survey: dogs coming home too muddy after visits.
The mud was no mystery. A ditch on the property had become clogged with silt, tree limbs and root systems, according to the city's construction update page. Water overflowed into the large dog area after rain.
Work unfolded in two phases. Earthwork in fall 2024 regraded the site, channeled water away from the park and required removing several trees. In October 2025, the city updated its land lease with Georgia Power to allow a contractor onto the property for the second phase: shade structures, the wash station, agility equipment, improved ground cover and drainage.
About $560,000 of the $1.04 million budget has been spent so far, according to the city's 2027 budget document. The remaining balance is expected to be used in the current fiscal year.
The park already had a brief soft opening in September before closing again Sept. 21-23 so crews could install the shade canopies. By Thursday, Sept. 24, workers were spotted on ladders bolting the new structures into place.
The dog park sits within Morgan Falls Overlook Park and connects to the Springway Trail, whose 1.88-mile Segment 2A linking the overlook park to Cimarron Parkway and Roswell Road opened in May 2025.
