Voters in Georgia Senate District 14 will choose between Democrat Kevin Abel and Republican Michael Dvorscak on Tuesday, Nov. 3, to succeed Democratic state Sen. Josh McLaurin.
The district includes portions of Sandy Springs, Roswell, Alpharetta, Johns Creek and northeast Atlanta. McLaurin is running for lieutenant governor, leaving the Senate seat open.
The candidates
Abel has lived in North Fulton since 1990, according to his campaign website. Born in Cape Town, South Africa, he moved to the United States in 1979 at age 14.
Abel and his wife founded a technology consulting business. He also served as chairman of the Georgia Department of Transportation Board. His campaign priorities include affordable housing, expanded healthcare access, higher teacher pay and transportation funding for North Fulton.
Abel received the Moms Demand Action Gun Sense Candidate distinction. The designation recognizes support for gun safety policies and is separate from an endorsement, according to the organization.
Dvorscak is a commercial real estate professional who campaigns as a Republican focused on taxes, public safety and healthcare. His published positions include reducing taxes, expanding school choice and increasing healthcare price transparency, according to BallotReady’s compilation of his campaign statements.
At a Johns Creek campaign rally, Dvorscak supported Medicaid expansion, citing an estimated 250,000 people he said lacked access to insurance, NRI Pulse reported.
What’s at stake
The winner will represent District 14 in the 56-member Georgia Senate, where Republicans hold the majority. State senators serve two-year terms.
The race will determine whether Democrats retain the seat McLaurin has represented since 2023 or Republicans gain a North Fulton district.
When and how to vote
Polls are open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Voters must use their assigned Election Day polling place and bring an accepted photo ID. Anyone in line by 7 p.m. may still vote.
Residents can confirm their polling location and view their sample ballot through Georgia’s My Voter Page.
A candidate must receive more than 50% of the vote to win outright. If a runoff is necessary, it will be held Dec. 1.
Election results will be posted on the Georgia Secretary of State’s results website after polls close.
