A federal drug suspect's car launched onto a Sandy Springs Police patrol cruiser during a chase Saturday, July 18, after officers tried to box him in near the 8100 block of Colquitt Road, according to Sandy Springs Police and CBS Atlanta.
Jorge Luis Delgado-Bermudez, who was wanted on drug charges in Fulton County and faced federal charges according to police, struck a concrete barrier while fleeing. The impact lifted the rear of his vehicle and dropped it on top of the patrol car. Dash camera video from the cruiser captured the moment of the crash.
The officers inside the cruiser were not injured.
The Sandy Springs Police Department's Street Crimes Unit was assisting the Department of Homeland Security's Atlanta field office in attempting to arrest Delgado-Bermudez. After the crash, Delgado-Bermudez tried to run on foot but was quickly taken into custody, police said.
The specific charges he faces have not been publicly detailed.
Fox 5 Atlanta, which reported the arrest Monday, July 20, described Delgado-Bermudez as "tied to a large criminal organization."
No bystanders were injured in the incident.
Embankment rescue near Trowbridge Road
In a separate incident Friday, July 17, Sandy Springs firefighters rescued a driver trapped inside a vehicle that went down an embankment near Trowbridge Road and Spalding Drive.
Sandy Springs Fire Department crews arrived to find the car at the bottom of the embankment with the driver still inside. First responders stabilized the vehicle before extricating the motorist, who was transported to a local hospital with minor injuries, according to the Sandy Springs Fire Department.
Authorities have not released the driver's identity or provided a condition update. The cause of the single-vehicle crash remains under investigation.
