A pedestrian died after being struck by a vehicle at Mason Road and Hunter Road in Fulton County, the Georgia Department of Public Safety confirmed Saturday, Sept. 5.
The crash was the first fatality recorded in the state's 2026 Labor Day holiday count. Georgia State Patrol Post 51 Gwinnett investigated the single-vehicle collision, the department posted on X that morning.
The victim's name has not been released. Neither has the victim's age, the type of vehicle involved nor the time the crash occurred. It is also unclear whether the Mason Road and Hunter Road intersection falls within Sandy Springs city limits or in unincorporated Fulton County. The Georgia State Patrol has not provided additional details about the circumstances.
The Labor Day enforcement period began at 6 p.m. Friday, Sept. 4, and runs through midnight Monday, Sept. 7. GSP Sgt. Michael Strickland told WGXA-TV on Sept. 3 that the shorter holiday window tends to pack more drivers onto the road. He urged motorists to leave early and plan for delays.
"We know people plan to party this weekend, but if you plan to drink — don't drink and drive ... Use Uber. Have a designated driver," Strickland said in the same interview.
Statewide, the department's holiday count had logged 27 crashes as of 6 a.m. Saturday, 13WMAZ reported. Five people were injured. Five of the 27 crashes involved impaired drivers, and one involved a commercial motor vehicle.
Officers also issued 85 DUI citations, 71 distracted driving citations and 120 seatbelt citations during that same window.
The enforcement period continues through midnight Monday, Sept. 7, and the Georgia State Patrol has not released further details about the pedestrian crash.
