Riverwood pitcher May Weis struck out her 500th career batter on Tuesday, Sept. 1, as the Raiders blanked Gainesville 8-0 to open GHSA Region 7-6A play.

The milestone marks a signature achievement for Weis, a junior left-handed pitcher who has anchored the Sandy Springs program's pitching staff. The Riverwood Athletics website called the shutout a great team effort and a strong start to region play. No individual pitching line for the game was available.

The win improved Riverwood's record to 7-3-1 overall and 1-0 in Region 7-6A, putting the Raiders in first place in the region standings, according to MaxPreps.

Weis committed to the University of South Carolina's softball program on Sept. 7, 2025, and is ranked a four-star recruit by On3, which ranks her the No. 99 prospect in the country. South Carolina's 2027 recruiting class ranked No. 10 nationally, according to On3.

The Raiders opened the 2026-27 season by sweeping the Battle of Sandy Springs tournament, beating Mount Vernon, Holy Innocents' and North Springs to start 3-0. Riverwood carried that early momentum through a non-region schedule that included both wins and close contests before Tuesday's dominant conference opener against Gainesville.

The 8-0 result was Riverwood's first shutout in region play this season. The box score on MaxPreps confirmed the final score but did not include individual stats.

Riverwood's region schedule continues with a home game against Roswell on Tuesday, Sept. 8, followed by a trip to Johns Creek on Thursday, Sept. 10, and a home matchup with Milton on Tuesday, Sept. 15.
