Sandy Springs stands to receive an estimated $112.3 million for transportation projects after Fulton County voters outside Atlanta narrowly renewed the transportation sales tax on Nov. 3.
Unofficial results showed 129,283 votes in favor and 125,417 against, a margin of 3,866 votes, Appen Media reported. The measure received 50.76% support.
The renewal continues the 0.75% Transportation Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax, or TSPLOST, from April 1, 2027, through March 31, 2032. It is projected to generate approximately $653 million, distributed among participating Fulton County cities based on population. Atlanta has a separate transportation sales tax.
What Sandy Springs gets
The county’s Sandy Springs fact sheet estimates the city’s revenue at $112,340,820. Planned investments include roadway improvements, sidewalks, bicycle infrastructure, bridges and traffic safety projects.
The largest individual allocation is $44.6 million for Phase 2 of the Hammond Drive Corridor Improvements, according to the city’s project breakdown. That phase covers Roswell Road to Boylston Drive and Glenridge Drive to Barfield Road.
The county fact sheet groups Hammond Drive with $1.5 million for Riverside Drive at Heards Ferry Road design work, producing a combined $46.1 million roadway category.
How the funding tiers work
The city divides projects into three priority tiers.
Tier 1 totals approximately $95.5 million, representing 85% of projected revenue. Tier 2 adds approximately $16.9 million, bringing the combined total to the city’s estimated $112.3 million share.
Tier 2 includes about $12.6 million for operations and safety and $4.3 million for additional sidewalks. Those projects depend on revenue exceeding Tier 1 needs without inflation consuming the available funding.
Tier 3 contains approximately $16.9 million for access management improvements and would require collections to reach 115% of projections.
The full three-tier list totals approximately $129.2 million. That figure includes projects contingent on higher collections.
Hammond Drive background
The existing Hammond Drive project between Roswell Road and Glenridge Drive is separate from the additional Phase 2 segments.
The city says final design and right-of-way acquisition are complete, including the purchase of 37 properties. Construction is expected to begin in early 2027, according to its Hammond Drive project page.
That project includes multi-use paths on both sides of the road, four pedestrian crossings and a bicycle and pedestrian underpass at Kayron Drive.
Traffic counts collected in 2019 showed approximately 17,500 vehicles using the corridor daily. The city says congestion has contributed to cut-through traffic in surrounding neighborhoods.
Other planned projects
Tier 1 also includes a $16 million sidewalk program, a $5 million bridge program and $4 million for mid-block pedestrian crossings.
Other allocations include intersection improvements at Peachtree Dunwoody Road and Johnson Ferry Road, Roswell Road safety planning, concept development for Northside Drive at I-285 and a Holcomb Bridge Road multi-use path.
Voters first approved Fulton’s TSPLOST in 2016 and renewed it in 2021. Residents can review the complete project list on the city’s TSPLOST page.
