A shivering, waterlogged kitten trapped in a storm drain along Mount Vernon Road found a permanent home within 24 hours after Sandy Springs firefighters pulled it to safety on Saturday, July 18.

Drivers passing the drain spotted the kitten and flagged down a fire crew, according to Fox 5 Atlanta, which first reported the rescue. Firefighters extracted the animal from the drain and brought it back to their station.

Once inside, crews dried the kitten off and fed it. The animal had been soaking in the drain long enough to be visibly shaking when firefighters reached it.

On Sunday, July 19, a member of the city of Sandy Springs' communications team adopted the kitten, giving it what Fox 5 Atlanta's headline called its "furever home." The adopter's name has not been made public.

The rescue took place along Mount Vernon Road near Spalding Drive, a corridor that includes Sandy Springs Fire Station 5. Fox 5's report did not specify which station's crew responded.

The Sandy Springs Fire Department operates under Interim Fire Chief Jesse Bernard, who was promoted to the role on Wednesday, May 21, after former Fire Chief Keith Sanders moved up to assistant city manager. The department is one of only 25 in Georgia to hold an ISO Class 1 rating, the highest fire-protection designation in the country.

Bernard has not commented publicly on the kitten rescue.

The animal went from a dark storm drain to a warm fire station to a city employee's home in roughly a day.
