Sandy Springs residents have until Oct. 14 to apply for a vacant seat on the Fulton County Board of Education.

The District 3 seat opened after Katie Gregory, who served as board vice president, resigned effective Sept. 18. The board is accepting letters of interest and resumes from community members who want to serve the remainder of Gregory's term, which expires Dec. 31, 2028.

District 3 covers portions of Sandy Springs, East Point, College Park and Hapeville.

How to apply

Candidates must submit a letter of interest outlining their qualifications and a resume by 5 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 14. Materials go to [email protected] or by hand delivery to the Board Services Office at 6201 Powers Ferry Road, Atlanta, GA 30339, according to the district's vacancy page.

Qualified applicants must attend a mandatory in-person information session on Tuesday, Oct. 20. The district said it will provide the time and location after candidates apply.

Who qualifies

Applicants must be at least 21 years old, a Georgia resident and a District 3 resident for at least 12 months. They cannot serve on the governing body of a private K-12 school, work for the Board of Education or the state Department of Education, sit on the State Board of Education, or have an immediate family member serving as a board member, superintendent, principal, assistant principal or system administrative staff in the district.

The board will interview candidates and select one to fill the seat. The appointment does not guarantee a future seat. The appointee must still qualify with the Secretary of State's office and run for election.

What else changed

At its Sept. 17 meeting, the board unanimously voted to appoint District 6 Board Member Kimberly Dove as the new vice president, filling the leadership vacancy Gregory's departure created, according to the Sept. 18 board bulletin. The vice president serves a one-year term.

Board President Kristin McCabe continues to lead the seven-member body, whose members are elected by district to four-year terms. Superintendent Mike Looney serves as an ex-officio member.

The board's next work session is scheduled for Tuesday, Oct. 13, at the FCS North Learning Center, 450 Northridge Pkwy. in Sandy Springs.
