North Springs rolled over crosstown rival Riverwood 48-12 on Friday, Aug. 21, delivering the Spartans football program its 300th all-time victory.

The blowout at Riverwood's field on Raider Drive gave first-year head coach Walter Vaughn a milestone win in his debut game. North Springs opened the 2026 season 1-0 while the Raiders dropped to 0-1.

It wasn't close.

The school's official account announced the achievement on X Saturday, tagging the principal, athletic director and Fulton Zone 6 and calling it "an amazing win over crosstown rival Riverwood to take North Springs to 300 wins."

From 1969 champs to 300 wins

The milestone stretches back to the program's peak era. North Springs won the 1969 Class 2A GHSA state championship, beating Gainesville 28-21 in the final. Quarterback Jim Gregory scored three touchdowns that night, including a 75-yard run with 2:56 left, according to Georgia High School Football Daily. The program still carries "1969 STATE CHAMPS" in its social media identity.

In 2026, fifty-seven seasons after that title, the Spartans are in what the Fulton Neighbor called "a transitional period" under Vaughn, who began his coaching career at North Springs as the defensive line coach in 2021 before being elevated to head coach for 2026.

Crosstown bragging rights

Both schools sit within Sandy Springs city limits, making the rivalry one of the few true neighborhood matchups in Fulton County. Friday's 36-point margin left little doubt about which program enters the season with momentum.

At the July 24 Fulton County Football Media Day, held at the College Football Hall of Fame in Atlanta, quarterback Zaire Sykes, Joseph Victor, Cooper Hammett and Miles Jackson represented the Spartans alongside Vaughn.

North Springs travels to Creekview in Canton on Friday, Aug. 28, at 7:30 p.m. The Spartans' home opener is Sept. 11 against Kennesaw Mountain, also at 7:30 p.m.
