Riverwood softball opens its GHSA Class 6A state playoff run Wednesday, Oct. 14, with a best-of-three series against Decatur at Oakhurst Park.

The first game of Wednesday’s doubleheader begins at 2 p.m., according to the Riverwood Athletics announcement. A deciding third game, if needed, will follow Thursday. Tickets are available through GoFan.

The Raiders enter the postseason at 15-7 overall and 7-3 in Region 7-6A, according to GHSA standings. Riverwood and Lanier finished with matching region records behind champion Johns Creek.

Decatur won Region 4-6A with a 14-2 league record and finished 17-7 overall. The Bulldogs ranked No. 14 in the final Class 6A Post Season Rankings, while Riverwood ranked No. 17, according to GHSA.

Riverwood earned its berth through the ranking system. Under the revised playoff format, region champions receive automatic berths, with the remaining spots awarded through PSR.

The Raiders built momentum late in the season. Senior left fielder Lizzie King delivered a walk-off single against Lanier on Tuesday, Oct. 6, driving in pitcher May Weis in the bottom of the seventh for a 3-2 victory in Riverwood’s final home game.

Weis, a senior committed to the University of South Carolina, anchors the pitching staff. She recorded her 500th career strikeout in a Sept. 1 win over Gainesville, breaking a school record that had stood since 2010.

“When you have a pitcher at this level that you can trust and count on, it makes not only my life easier, but it gives confidence to the whole team,” head coach Jason Russo told Fulton Neighbor in September.

Riverwood’s senior core also includes shortstop Zoe Taylor, center fielder Audrey Busch, right fielder Leah Weis and King. Sophomore Sydney Jimenez moved to catcher during the season.

Russo, in his first season leading the program, opened the campaign with wins over Mount Vernon, Holy Innocents’ and North Springs at the Battle of Sandy Springs tournament.

The winner of the Decatur series advances to the second round, scheduled for Oct. 19–22. The GHSA state championship tournament runs Oct. 28–31 at South Commons Softball Complex in Columbus.

Wednesday’s first pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m. at Oakhurst Park, 307 Feld Ave., Decatur.
