A police chase that started on Interstate 285 ended Wednesday, Aug. 5, on Riverview Road in Sandy Springs after Cobb County officers pursued a U-Haul truck linked to an armed robbery in Memphis, Tennessee. Five suspects were arrested and at least one officer was hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries.
The pursuit began when Cobb County patrol officers received information about the U-Haul and spotted it on I-285 traveling with two other vehicles, WSB-TV reported. Officers stopped the two cars, but the U-Haul driver fled, triggering the pursuit that ended near the 4900 block of Riverview Road SE.
When the truck came to a stop, the driver jumped out and ran without putting the U-Haul in park. The truck rolled down an incline, struck a police cruiser and pushed it into a second patrol vehicle, trapping one officer briefly between the two cars, according to WSB-TV. A second officer was also injured in the crash. Both were taken to the hospital and are expected to recover.
A Cobb County Police Department spokesperson told Atlanta News First that officers searched the area extensively before taking all five suspects into custody. The department confirmed there is no ongoing danger to the public.
Sandy Springs Police and Georgia State Patrol troopers also responded to the scene, an Atlanta News First crew observed.
The five suspects are being held for further investigation by Memphis police, according to WSB-TV. The U-Haul driver faces additional charges. None of the suspects have been publicly identified, and no specific charges had been announced as of Wednesday evening.
Cobb County Police have not released a formal press statement detailing the circumstances. The exact number of injured officers remains unclear: Patch and initial reports cited one officer hurt, while WSB-TV reported two were hospitalized.
The incident is the second cross-jurisdictional chase to spill into Sandy Springs this summer. On July 18, a federal drug suspect's car landed on a Sandy Springs patrol cruiser during a chase near Colquitt Road.
