Riverwood girls soccer sets tryout meeting after breakout season under Martinez

Riverwood International Charter School's girls soccer program is looking for its next wave of players, with a mandatory interest meeting set for Wednesday, Aug. 26, at 3:45 p.m. in the school's Media Center.

Any student interested in trying out for the upcoming season should plan to attend, according to a post from the Riverwood Athletics department on Aug. 18. Students with questions can email head coach Tony Martinez at [email protected].

The meeting comes on the heels of a breakout stretch for the program.

Under Martinez, who joined the Riverwood coaching staff in 2024, the Raiders' girls soccer team posted a 19-2 record last season, captured their first region championship in more than a decade and advanced to the GHSA Elite 8, according to Riverwood Athletics' coaches awards announcement. The team has reached the state playoffs in both of Martinez's seasons leading the program.

Martinez earned the Isaac Seals Male Coach of the Year honor at Riverwood's annual coaches awards ceremony in May.

A DeKalb County native and Cross Keys High School graduate, Martinez captained the Cross Keys squad that reached the GHSA State Finals for the first time in that Brookhaven school's history before an ankle injury ended his playing career and steered him toward coaching. Since arriving at Riverwood, he has also launched an annual Thanksgiving break soccer camp aimed at growing the sport within the school community.

The Sandy Springs school, located on Raider Drive, enrolls roughly 1,737 students in grades 9 through 12 and competes in GHSA Region 7-6A. With a roster spot on a program trending sharply upward, the Aug. 26 meeting is the first step for any prospective player.
