A ruptured water main has shut down a stretch of Roberts Drive that connects to Roswell Road, and the closure could last the rest of the week.

The city of Sandy Springs announced Tuesday, July 14, that Roberts Drive is closed to through traffic between 9755 Roberts Drive and Roswell Road after what the city described as an overnight accident that damaged a fire hydrant and the water main beneath the road. Atlanta Watershed crews are on site making repairs, according to a report by Appen Media staff reporter Hannah Yahne published the same day.

Contractors estimate the road will reopen by Saturday, July 18. That timeline is an estimate, not a guaranteed date.

Closure details

The affected segment runs from the 9755 Roberts Drive address to the Roswell Road intersection, a major corridor through Sandy Springs. Drivers who use Roberts Drive to reach Roswell Road or points south will need to find another way through at least Saturday.

The city posted a traffic alert to its official Facebook page around noon on July 14, calling the work an "emergency water main repair" and advising motorists to follow the posted detour. No specific alternate streets were named in the city's public text.

Detour signs are posted in the area. Drivers should watch for them and plan extra travel time, particularly during morning and evening commutes.

Crash details unknown

Neither the city nor Appen Media has released details about the overnight accident that triggered the break. The time of the crash, the vehicle or vehicles involved, and whether anyone was injured have not been disclosed. Sandy Springs Police have not publicly confirmed a response to the incident.

The Appen Media report noted it would be updated as more information becomes available.
