Sandy Springs police and code enforcement shut down Nubia Café and Restaurant on Wednesday, Aug. 19, after an investigation into a weekend shooting revealed the business was operating as an illegal after-hours club without required state licenses or city permits.

The closure followed a shooting early Saturday, Aug. 15, that left two men hospitalized. Police said a fight broke out inside the business at 8599 Roswell Road and spilled into the parking lot around 5:43 a.m. During the altercation, 28-year-old Bienvenu Deounoudjou shot a 34-year-old man multiple times in the arm and upper chest, according to the Sandy Springs Police Department. The victim was taken to the hospital and later released.

Deounoudjou also sustained a gunshot wound to his leg, which police described as an inadvertent self-inflicted wound. He was hospitalized before being arrested.

He faces charges of aggravated assault and possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony.

As detectives investigated the shooting, they determined Nubia Café lacked the necessary state licenses and city permits to operate, according to 11Alive. On Wednesday, police, Sandy Springs Fire Department personnel and code enforcement officers conducted a joint inspection of the property.

Business owner Frank Lyonga, as identified in the department's press statement reported by Fox 5 Atlanta, was cited for multiple violations related to the establishment's operation. The business was then shut down.

Police have not disclosed what triggered the initial fight inside the business. Authorities also have not said whether Lyonga faces additional legal charges beyond the civil citations, Fox 5 Atlanta reported.

A police officer was photographed affixing a closure notice to the building on Wednesday, according to an image released by the department.

No court date for Deounoudjou or hearing date for the property citations has been announced.
