A judge denied bond Thursday, Aug. 20, for the 28-year-old man accused of shooting a victim three times outside an illegal after-hours club on Roswell Road, as investigators revealed the chest wound missed the victim's heart by inches.
Bienvenu Deonoudjou faces charges of aggravated assault and possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony in connection with the Aug. 15 shooting outside Nubia Café and Restaurant at 8599 Roswell Road, Suite C1.
The 34-year-old victim was shot in the chest, arm and grazed on the side around 5:45 a.m. that Saturday after a fight that started inside the business spilled into the parking lot, according to WSB-TV. He was released from the hospital later that Saturday.
"It was an absolute, absolute miracle," Sandy Springs police detective J.T. Williams said of the victim's survival, noting the bullet came within a couple of inches of striking his heart.
Suspect shot himself, fled to Roswell
Deonoudjou inadvertently shot himself in the leg during the incident, according to Sandy Springs officer Jarrell Green. Rather than staying at the scene, he turned up in Roswell, where police responded to a separate 911 call about a person who had been shot.
Roswell officers provided emergency medical treatment for the leg wound, which appeared serious, before an ambulance arrived. Roswell police then notified Sandy Springs detectives that the man matched their shooting suspect.
Deonoudjou remained hospitalized until Wednesday, Aug. 19, longer than the victim he allegedly shot. Sandy Springs officers arrested him as he was being discharged.
Illegal club shut down
As we reported Aug. 20, Sandy Springs police, firefighters and code enforcement officers conducted a joint inspection of Nubia Café on Aug. 19 and shut it down. Investigators determined the business was operating as an illegal after-hours establishment without required state licenses and city permits.
The victim and his friend told detectives that employees inside were serving bottles of alcohol for $150 each, according to detective Williams. Business owner Frank Iyonga was cited for multiple violations, 11Alive reported.
No attorney for Deonoudjou has been publicly identified. No next court date has been announced.
