Riverwood’s softball team is headed to the GHSA Class 6A state playoffs after closing the regular season with a 5-1 victory over Roswell.
The Raiders will travel to Decatur High School on Wednesday, Oct. 14, for a first-round doubleheader beginning at 2 p.m., according to the Riverwood Athletics schedule.
The teams will play a best-of-three series, with a deciding third game Thursday if necessary. GHSA rules give the higher seed hosting rights for the first two playoff rounds.
Riverwood Athletics announced the berth on Facebook, crediting the Roswell win with helping the Raiders secure their place in the postseason.
Strong finish sends Raiders to state
Head coach Jason Russo’s team entered the regular-season finale following a 3-2 walk-off victory over Lanier on Tuesday, Oct. 6.
Left fielder Lizzie King drove in pitcher May Weis in the bottom of the seventh inning to win that game, as we previously reported. Riverwood stood at 13-7-1 overall and 6-3 in Region 7-6A after the Lanier victory.
Under GHSA’s 2026–27 softball rules, region champions qualify automatically for the state playoffs. The remaining teams qualify through the Post Season Ranking system.
Riverwood Athletics said the Raiders finished among the top 20 teams in Class 6A. The announcement did not provide an exact final ranking or playoff seed.
Weis, a University of South Carolina commit, reached 500 career strikeouts during an 8-0 victory over Gainesville on Sept. 1, according to Riverwood Athletics.
Playoff schedule and tickets
A series victory over Decatur would send Riverwood to the second round on Oct. 21–22. Winners advance to the Elite Eight, a double-elimination state tournament scheduled for Oct. 28–31 at South Commons Softball Complex in Columbus.
Tickets for the first round, second round and Elite Eight must be purchased through GoFan, according to GHSA. Riverwood Athletic Association passes are not valid for state playoff games.
Fans should check the school’s athletics schedule for updates before traveling to Wednesday’s doubleheader.
