A 17-year-old has been charged with murder in the fatal shooting of a man at a Sandy Springs apartment complex on Friday, Aug. 28.

Sandy Springs police on Monday, Aug. 31, announced the arrest of Christopher Castillo in the death of 25-year-old Williams Lopez Rodriguez at The Celebration at Sandy Springs Apartments, 7000 Roswell Road. Castillo faces charges of felony murder and possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony.

As we reported Aug. 29, officers initially responded to the apartment complex just before 6:30 p.m. on Aug. 28 after family members called for a welfare check. Officers entered a second-floor unit and found Rodriguez dead from an apparent gunshot wound to the head, Fox 5 Atlanta reported, citing the Sandy Springs Police Department (SSPD).

Detectives identified Castillo as the suspect and determined he had fled the apartment before officers arrived, according to Rough Draft Atlanta. The outlet reported that only limited details are available about the suspect and victim, including how they knew each other.

Cobb County police arrested Castillo on Saturday, Aug. 29, during a traffic stop at Barrett Parkway and Mall Boulevard near the Interstate 75 and 575 interchange. The SSPD thanked Cobb County officers for their assistance in locating and apprehending the suspect.

Police have not released information about a possible motive for the shooting, Fox 5 Atlanta reported.

Castillo, described by police as a foreign national, also received an immigration detainer from U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, according to Fulton County Jail records. The detainer asks the Fulton County Sheriff's Office to hold Castillo for 48 hours past any scheduled release. Castillo's country of origin has not been disclosed.

The case remains an active investigation, the SSPD said. No court dates have been announced.
