A theft suspect who fled Roswell police and abandoned a vehicle near Hannover Park Road and Dunwoody Place on Thursday, Oct. 1, remained at large as of Friday, Oct. 2.

Sandy Springs police confirmed their officers assisted the Roswell Police Department in searching for the suspect, who ran into nearby woods after ditching the car in a Sandy Springs neighborhood Thursday evening. The Sandy Springs Police Department posted an advisory on X at 9:22 p.m. Oct. 1 warning residents to stay clear of the area.

Roswell police told WSB-TV Channel 2 Action News that the suspect had committed a theft at a Walmart in Roswell before fleeing a traffic stop. The suspect then drove into the Sandy Springs neighborhood and ran on foot into the woods.

Officers from both departments searched the wooded area but did not find the suspect. Officer Tim Lupo, a Roswell Police Department spokesperson, told WSB-TV that officers would continue working to take the suspect into custody.

"After an exhaustive search, he was not located," Lupo said. "Our officers are clearing from the immediate area to conduct further follow up to take him into custody on his charges."

The two departments gave conflicting accounts of what was known about the suspect's potential threat level. WSB-TV reported that Sandy Springs police said they did not believe the suspect was armed. Fox 5 Atlanta, reporting Thursday, said police had not disclosed whether the suspect was believed to be armed. No injuries were reported.

Sandy Springs police posted a follow-up on X at 12:09 a.m. Friday stating the scene was safe and clear. That update referred to officers leaving the immediate search area roughly three hours after the initial advisory, not to the suspect being caught. As of Friday, the suspect had not been apprehended, and both departments said the investigation was continuing.

Neither Roswell nor Sandy Springs police have released the suspect's name, physical description or specific charges. As of Saturday, Oct. 3, neither department had issued a further public update on the suspect's status.
