Sandy Springs will apply for a $3 million state grant for a proposed extension of its Morgan Falls trail, following a divided City Council vote Tuesday, Oct. 6.

The council approved the application 4-2, with Council Members Melody Kelley and Mary Ford opposing it, according to Rough Draft Atlanta’s meeting coverage. Residents offered both support and objections during public comment.

The request would help pay for Segment 2C of the Springway trail network, a proposed 1.6-mile connection from Morgan Falls Overlook Park toward Grogans Ferry Road.

Extension would advance planned loop

The addition would bring the developed trail to approximately 3.4 miles, moving the city closer to its planned 5.6-mile Morgan Falls Loop, according to Rough Draft’s September project report.

The city’s Morgan Falls Connector page lists the completed Segment 2A at 1.88 miles. It connects the park with Roswell Road at Cimarron Parkway.

Segment 2C remains in design. Applying for the grant does not guarantee an award or authorize construction.

Funding decision comes next spring

The city is seeking funding through the Georgia Department of Natural Resources’ Outdoor Stewardship Program.

The DNR’s application schedule sets Oct. 16 as the deadline for preliminary applications. Selected applicants will receive invitations to a second round in spring 2027, with final project agreements anticipated that summer.

The program supports local parks and trails, conservation lands and stewardship projects. Its funding comes from a portion of existing state sales taxes on outdoor sporting goods.
